Just as Ryan was passing the McCullough-Jameson stables, Cassie flagged him down. He pulled over and climbed out of his car.

“What are you doing over this way?” she asked, giving him a hug. “And why did you leave Alex’s and my wedding before I had a chance to catch up with you?”

Ryan laughed. “Which question do you want answered more?”

“Both.”

Typical Cassie. “Okay, I’m over this way because I was headed over to see the house you and Alex are building, and I wanted a chance to catch up with you since I didn’t get to at your wedding.” Both lies and slightly evasive, but he was okay with that. All for a good cause. He cringed. Wasn’t it a good cause that had gotten him into trouble seven years ago and kept him away from Kelly for so long? “Truth?”

“I was waiting for it,” Cassie said, her hands on her hips now. He was relieved to see she hadn’t pulled out her horse whip. Always the cowgirl. Being pregnant didn’t seem to be slowing her down a bit.

“First you tell me what you’re doing here.”

“Helping Nan with a stallion.”

“You’re not taming stallions still, I hope.”

“Nope, just advising. But as soon as this baby is born, I’ll be back at it.” She patted her stomach fondly. “Now your turn.”

“I’m going over to see Evan and Eleanor McCullough.”

Cassie tilted her head to the side and looked at him skeptically. “Another lie?”

“I need their advice on something.”

“Does this have to do with Kelly?”

“It does.”

“And did your leaving my wedding early have something to do with Kelly?”

“It did.”

“Okay then, spill. Why are you visiting her grandparents?”

“Because my parents had dinner with them last night and told me that they are very fond of me and are hoping—promise you won’t tell a soul any of this?”

“Promise.”

“Especially Skye and Anne.”

She groaned but conceded.

“Even Alex.”

Cassie scoffed at that. “You’re asking me to keep a secret from my husband of what? Less than two weeks?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

Ryan considered that for a moment. “Until Valentine’s Day.”

Cassie calculated that in her mind. Not too long. “Okay. Spill.”

“They’re all hoping we get married and settle down and have babies.”

“They’re not holding a grudge?”

“You mean like some of the McCulloughs?”

“Right.”

“Well, I think Skye and Anne are the toughest, and they’ve eased up on me a little bit, at least according to Kelly. So I think I’m okay.” He cringed. “Except I haven’t seen her parents yet.”

“Yeah, they may be a bit more reticent to forgive you for breaking their little girl’s heart. All the McCulloughs are very protective of one another, especially of Kelly.”

“Why Kelly?”

Cassie shook her head as if she were talking to an idiot, or a man anyway. “Because she’s so sweet?”

“True.” But she was all grown up now, and a not-so-sweet side had emerged, he was happy to say.

“So, that doesn’t tell me why you’re visiting the grandparents.”

“Because I need advice. About a ring. Top secret, remember?”

Cassie made a gesture as if to zip her lips. “You’re proposing on Valentine’s Day?”

“That’s the plan.
